              INTRODUCTORY POST

Hello and welcome to the Survival Gear Shack Blog. I am excited about this opportunity to share with you the many survival skills and survival stories I have acquired over many years of Outfitting and Guiding hunters and fishermen in the wilds of Montana.

When you spend weeks on end in the type of terrain shown in the picture above (Smith River, Montana), survival skills and survival gear are not just a hobby or novelty, but rather a way of life.

I spend all of each June and often the first week of July guiding 5-day float fishing trips on the Smith River. Anyone that knows anything about Montana knows that the weather in the mountains is extremely unpredictable. In June, you never know what to expect. It may be sunny and 90 degrees, or it might be 15 degrees and whiteout blizzard conditions dumping a foot or more of snow on you - sometimes all the above within a 24 hour period!

Comfortably surviving these adverse conditions is not all that difficult, but can be a challenge at times, and it never ceases to amaze me how clueless and unprepared some of the adventurers I run across really are.

In my upcoming blog posts, I will be sharing with you the basic skills you need to not only survive, but survive in comfort. I will also be talking about the essential survival gear you should possess and become familiar with, and most importantly, "common sense" tips mental preparedness, and attitude.

My next post will be sharing some of the stories about the predicaments I have been in or witnessed others be in, and how these challenges were faced and dealt with. Please check back regularly, and thanks for reading!
